The MSME Department currently offers two Master of Education (M.Ed.) degrees, K-8 Mathematics Specialist and, in collaboration with the JMU Department of Mathematics and Statistics, a M.Ed. in Mathematics. See below for more information on each program.

K-8 Math Specialist: Becoming a teacher leader in K-8 settings.

Mathematics specialists are teacher leaders based in elementary and middle school settings who have strong preparation and background in mathematics and instructional strategies specific to grades K-8 and are prepared to serve in leadership roles.

Mathematics specialists serve as resources for professional development for teachers, curriculum development and implementation, and parent and community education.

Program consists of 36 hours: 15 hours of coursework in mathematics education and 6 hours of an externship. Each cohort group is restricted to 25 participants.

Prerequisites
  • Three years teaching mathematics
  • Six hours of mathematics courses
  • Complete Praxis II for middle school mathematics

M.Ed. in Mathematics: Becoming a secondary mathematics leader.

Deepen your knowledge and practice and conduct research in your own classroom to analyze how aspects of your practice impact students' learning.

Grow as a professional mathematics educator by studying advanced mathematical topics in relation to the mathematics courses you teach.

This program prepares educators to take leadership positions in mathematics departments of local school districts.

Prerequisites

Undergraduate mathematics (15 credits or more) including a calculus sequence and linear algebra.  An undergraduate major in mathematics or additional mathematics courses beyond linear algebra will be helpful, but not necessary.
