Campus Teaching Fellows
You can apply to the on campus teaching fellows program using the link in the Campus Teaching Fellows email to complete the application through the Madison Scholarship Hub.
Students planning to major in elementary education, early childhood education, or special education that meet the following requirements:
- All in-state Virginia residence students that are admitted JMU students for the Fall 2023 semester.
- Have attended high school in one of the participating districts (Harrisonburg, Rockingham, Warren, Frederick, Petersburg, Virginia Beach City, Page, or Portsmouth).
- Memorial hall is located at 395 S High St, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
- The Inner Campus Shuttle (ICS) has stops at Memorial and there is also a commuter parking lot.

Teaching fellows are high-achieving students who work closely with a faculty member as they work towards becoming an educator in their home districts after graduation. Fellows can contribute to research and classroom assistance throughout their time in the program.
All on campus Teaching Fellows are required to maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 and a major GPA of 3.0 to remain in the program.
Yes, in return for teaching two years in your home district once you graduate.
The amount of scholarships available will vary based on available funding.
Yes as long as you are enrolled as a full-time student at JMU.
This is very unlikely because the districts are chosen for their severe teacher shortage, however, if there are no jobs in your home district you can apply for jobs in other participating districts.
Graduating from JMU already gives you an advantage, the addition of this program/scholarship can also give you a hiring advantage.
You will be asked to respond to a few questions on the application. Expressing yourself clearly is always important.
We are currently only offering this program for Elementary Education, Inclusive Early Childhood Education, and Special Education.
The student has a grace period – a period of time (18 months) when the student does not have to make payments. During the grace period, no interest accrues on the loan.
The student can prepay the loan at any point once you enter the repayment period, without penalty.
The student will receive a repayment schedule during the grace period. The repayment schedule will provide the student with the interest rate, payment amounts, and payment methods.
One month after the grace period ends, the first payment is due. The loan carries a minimum monthly payment of $150. The payment may be higher, depending on the loan balance, and the student may make larger than the minimum payments to repay the loan more quickly. The maximum repayment period is 20 years. The loan period may be shorter based on the minimum monthly payments and the amount that is owed.
Paraprofessional Teaching Fellows
Using the link that was provided in the Campus Paraprofessional Fellows email, complete the Paraprofessional Teaching Fellows Application through Madison Scholarships Hub.
A transferable associate degree from a Virginia Community College will provide the smoothest transition to the JMU course work but we will consider other associate degrees from accredited institutions on a case by case basis.
