Break Description

denver rescue mission group serving a meal

Note: This trip is co-sponsored by the College of Business and is limited to COB major and minor students.

Want to spend break serving in the Mile High City? All College of Business students are invited to join this co-sponsored break serving with Denver Rescue Mission in Denver, CO! Denver Rescue Mission is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving those in the Denver metro area who are experiencing financial hardship, homelessness, and addiction. The Rescue Mission’s goal is to see lives transformed through personal accountability, education, spiritual development, and community relationships. Previous JMU groups have been able to learn about experiences of poverty, addiction, and homelessness along with the root causes of homelessness in the Denver area.

Our service will include preparing and serving food, working in the New Life program, and working in the warehouse. Exact tasks will depend on the current needs of the community - previous breaks have also served by organizing donations and restoring or cleaning facilities.

In order to fully serve our community partner, participants must be able to carry loads of up to 25 pounds and be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time. Due to the nature of these work conditions, the break is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.

We will cook, eat, and sleep as guests of Highlands United Methodist Church. Plan to bring a pillow, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad.

Come learn about the resilience of communities facing the effects of gentrification, and support community members as they navigate a transforming city landscape.

The estimated cost for this break is $350 per person. **Please note: prices are subject to change depending on airefare, scholarship eligibility (if applicable), and fundraising.**

Registration Closed!

JMU is a member of the University Global Coalition with the United Nations and is committed to achieving a better and more sustainable future as defined by the Sustainable Development Goals.
