JMU is now accepting nominations for community members to serve on the Community engagement Coordinating Council Advisory Group.

The JMU Community engagement Coordinating Council (CeCC) is designed to enhance the quality of life for all in the local region by strengthening partnerships between JMU and the larger community. Community members and partners bring critical perspectives to the Council and JMU is seeking their involvement on the CeCC Advisory Group.

Nominations can be made online here and will be accepted through Monday, Aug. 1, 2022.

The CeCC has representation from various JMU academic and administrative departments that collaborate with the larger community. The goals of the CeCC are shaped by an Advisory Group to ensure efforts are meeting objectives and maintaining standards.


Advisory Group Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the Council’s understanding of the quality of communication between JMU and community partners and local residents
  • Raise awareness among the Council of current and emergent themes affecting community-JMU relationships
  • Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of partnership coordination at JMU
  • Provide insights on JMU’s accountability and follow-through in regard to community partnerships
  • Make recommendations to improve quality of community-JMU relationships; and
  • Participate in occasional ad hoc committees to advise and contribute to efforts like developing a Partnership evaluation tool, the Engagement for the Public Good conference, Carnegie Community Engagement application, and anchor institution initiatives

Advisory Group Expectations

  • Attend and actively participate in every other month ninety-minute meetings of the Advisory Group (approximately 6 per year)
  • Attend and actively participate in meetings of the whole Community engagement Coordinating Council (approximate one or two per year)
  • Respond to occasional phone calls and emails related to the functioning of the Advisory Group

  • Community members receive a $150 annual stipend and serve a two-year term



To nominate a candidate (self-nominations are acceptable) please submit the following information:

  • Candidate first and last name
  • Candidate email address and phone number
  • Brief description of candidate’s community involvement (one paragraph or less)
  • Brief rationale for nomination of candidate (one paragraph or less)
  • Background and perspective of candidate that will contribute to our commitment to social and racial justice as well as equity (one paragraph or less)
  • Name and contact information of nominator

Nominations are due by Aug. 1, 2022.


A note or two about the JMU CeCC. The council is working to build community-JMU relationships that:

  • Are marked by integrity, trust, coordination, and communication
  • Align JMU capacity with community priorities and strengths
  • Result in dynamic community-based learning environments where knowledge is co-created with the community
  • Lead to research and scholarship that enhances community-identified priorities

Representation from a wide variety of organizations. For example:
  • Umbrella organization that serves and/or supports other organizations
  • Anchor (School district, large medical institution)
  • Grassroots organization
  • Small, locally-based business
  • Faith-based organization
  • Governmental agency 
Role in the community. For example:

  • Staff person in one of the above listed organization types
  • Active community member
