Dr. Kristen Shrewsbury is the coordinator of English Language Learner Services and an instructor in the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) licensure program. She has provided academic support and advocacy for multilingual students, faculty, and staff at JMU since 2007. Shrewsbury teaches courses in first and second language acquisition and sociocultural variables in the classroom. Additionally, Shrewsbury’s doctoral research explored Shenandoah Valley lesbian couples’ conceptions of marriage during the lead up to marriage equality. Her research interests focus on relational knowing, and include mentorship, intellectual mattering, power dynamics, and contextual influences to social change. Shrewsbury is on the steering committee for the Madison Caucus for Gender Equality and serves as the Learning Centers’ Diversity Council representative.
