Program Description
The Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy and religion empowers students to analyze diverse worldviews and value systems. In a world that is increasingly pluralistic, ideologically driven and globally connected, skills in critical thinking and cross-cultural understanding are more important than ever. Our students apply this degree to a wide variety of career fields.
Students choose from among four concentrations: philosophy, interdisciplinary philosophy, religion or interdisciplinary religion. The interdisciplinary concentrations allow students to count relevant courses in another field toward the major and are a particularly good fit for students choosing philosophy and religion as a second major.

1 The General Education program contains a set of requirements each student must fulfill. Some requirements may be fulfilled by courses within the major.
2 The foreign language requirement may be satisfied by successful completion of the second semester of the intermediate level of the student’s chosen language (typically 232) or by placing out of that language through the Department of Foreign Language’s placement test.

Philosophy Concentration
Core Courses: 18 Credit Hours
Choose one History of Philosophy course: 3 Credit Hours
Depending on the manner in which they are taught, the following topics classes may be counted toward the history requirement if they are approved by petition to the academic unit head: PHIL 390 , PHIL 391 and PHIL 460 .
Choose one Metaphysics/Epistemology course: 3 Credit Hours
Depending on the manner in which they are taught, the following topics classes may be counted toward the metaphysics/epistemology requirement if they are approved by petition to the academic unit head: PHIL 390 and PHIL 391 .
Philosophy electives (six credits at the 300 level or above): 9 Credit Hours
Neither PHIL 120 nor PHIL 150 can be used as an elective.
Philosophy Concentration Total: 33 Credit Hours
Interdisciplinary Philosophy Concentration
Core Courses:18 Credit Hours
Choose one of the following Metaphysics/Epistemology courses: 3 Credit Hours
Depending on the manner in which they are taught, the following topics classes may be counted toward the metaphysics/epistemology requirement if they are approved by petition to the academic unit head: PHIL 390 and PHIL 391 .
Philosophy electives (three credits at the 300 level or above): 6 Credit Hours

Cognate of three courses from one or more disciplinary areas outside of philosophy: 9 Credit Hours

Religion Concentration
Concentration Core Courses: 9 Credit Hours
These required courses form the core of your major concentration:
Capstone: 3 Credit Hours
Your capstone also fulfills one of your track or breadth requirements. Typically, one capstone is offered per semester. Most students take their capstone course in their junior or senior years.
Choose one of the following courses:
Track Requirements: 12 Credit Hours
Choose 4 courses from one track. This will be your home track.
Breadth Requirements: 9 Credit Hours
Choose 3 additional courses: one from each of the other tracks. None of these may be cross-listed in your home track.
Religion Electives: 3 Credit Hours
Choose an additional religion course in order to reach 33 total credit hours for the major. Your elective may be from any of the tracks.
It may also include any of these courses outside the track system:

Choose an additional religion course in order to reach 36 total credit hours for the major. Your electives may be from any of the tracks. They may also include any of these courses outside the track system:
