OSM 100. Introduction to Business. 3 credits.

A general survey of the institution of business with emphasis on the history of business, the basic forms of business organization, ownership, finance, management, wages and labor relations.

OSM 130. Keyboarding Skill Development. 3 credits.

The development of proper keyboarding techniques, stroking speed and accuracy. Emphasis is placed on correct formatting of letter forms, manuscripts and simple statistical work.

OSM 200. BASIC Programming for Business Education and Office Administration. 3 credits.

Practical experience in designing and coding BASIC computer programs with specific applications for business teachers and office managers. Not available to students who have received credit in IDS 264 or CS 100.

OSM 230. Computer Word Processing Applications. 2 credits.

Use popular word processing software to develop formatting competence with a variety of office, professional and personal applications. Prerequisite: OSM 130 or equivalent.

OSM 250. Computer Spreadsheet Applications. 2 credits.

Use popular spreadsheet software to organize data to solve problems in a variety of office, professional and personal applications.

OSM 270. Business Machines. 3 credits.

A development of vocational competency in modern business machines. A program including skills needed to operate the latest business computing machines. Practical business problems are a part of the course and the 10-key touch system is stressed.

OSM 320. Office Management. 3 credits.

The management of the business office as a producing unit and the relation of the office routine to managerial control of several other departments of a business through preparation of reports, employee relations, work measurements and standards, and budgets. Case studies and simulations are included.

OSM 330. Business Letter Writing. 3 credits.

Development of the principles of effective business communication through the composition of business letters (routine, good news, bad news, persuasive and special). Emphasis is placed on composition, arrangement, style, spelling and positive writing. Prerequisite: ENG 101-102 and OSM 230 or equivalent.

OSM 330L. Business Letter Writing Lab (0, 3). 0 credits.

Course is designed to provide supervised laboratory for class projects assigned in OSM 330.

OSM 340. Information Processing Concepts. 3 credits.

Provides an introduction to information processing and computer systems, procedures and equipment used in automated business offices.

OSM 350. Office Procedures and Document Preparation. 3 credits.

Provides a variety of experiences in office systems procedures and preparation of frequently used business documents including letters, manuscripts, statistical tables, financial reports and simple legal documents. Prerequisite: OSM 230 or permission of instructor.

OSM 400. Business Report Writing. 3 credits.

Techniques, principles and standards of organized business report preparation and presentation. Emphasis is placed upon clarity, correctness and effectiveness in realistic problem solving through formal and informal reports. A study of collecting, organizing, constructing, analyzing, interpreting and presenting information through various communication media is made. Prerequisite: OSM 230.

OSM 400L. Business Report Writing Lab (0, 3). 0 credits.

Course is designed to provide supervised laboratory for class projects assigned in OSM 400.

OSM 420. Records and Database Management. 3 credits.

Provides a framework for understanding and applying knowledge and skills of manual and automated database organization to the effective management of records. Prerequisite: OSM 230 or permission of instructor.

OSM 420L. Records and Database Management Lab (0, 3). 0 credits.

Course is designed to provide supervised laboratory for class projects assigned in OSM 420.

OSM 430. Desktop Publishing. 3 credits.

Applications in planning, designing and producing the publications of business and education such as reports, newsletters, brochures, flyers, catalogs, forms, etc. using sophisticated desktop publishing software. Prerequisite: OSM 230 or equivalent.

OSM 490. Independent Study in Business Education. 1-3 credits each semester.

Designed to give capable students an opportunity to complete independent study or research on problems in business education. Prerequisite: Permission of the department head.

OSM 496C. Internship in Office Administration. 3 credits.

Supervised internships in the field of office administration. Prerequisite: Advanced standing, department major and permission of the department head.

OSM 499. Honors in Business Education and Administrative Services. 6 credits.
