Congratulations!

Congratulations to the 23 recipients of our Summer 2017 scholarship for unpaid internships, who received awards of $1,000-5,000 to assist with financial expenses!

How to Apply

To be considered for a scholarship in 2018, email your application and associated materials to Laura Hickerson at hickerly@jmu.edu during the spring semester 2018. Applications are due Friday, April 13, 2018. We cannot accept applications after this date due to deadlines required by the Financial Aid office. We also cannot accept or review incomplete applications.

Eligibility

This scholarship is available to all undergraduate JMU students working in an unpaid summer internship

Funds

  • Scholarship amount will vary from ($1,000-$5,000) based on the budget provided by the student
  • Scholarship funds are not meant to replace payment; they are meant for living expenses, food, rent, travel, etc. Funds will not be awarded for tuition for additional classes you wish to take during the summer.
  • Financial need is not required, but will be considered in the selection process
  • Funds are for unpaid internships only.  Not for research programs or placement programs that require you to pay a fee to obtain an internship
  • Students who receive grants and scholarships that total more than the cost of tuition and books must report the excess as income on their tax return. Consult your tax booklet or an accountant for more information.

Submit the Following Materials

  • Application parts 1-5 (including resume, budget, and employer verification)
  • Recommendation from a JMU faculty member or advisor (via this Qualtrics survey)
  • Email the materials above to Laura Hickerson, Internship Coordinator in Career & Academic Planning.

Selection Process

A selection committee made up of Career & Academic Planning staff and faculty at JMU will evaluate the applications. This is a selective process, and students are not guaranteed a scholarship on the basis of applying.

Internship Completion

Upon completion of the internship, you must complete a reflection paper, including an overview of your responsibilities, what you learned through the experience, and how the internship impacted your career plans. Students will also be asked to serve on internship panels that CAP sponsors in the future, if your schedule allows.
