Interleukin-3 (IL-3) is a cytokine that has been shown to influence the proliferation and differentiation of various cell types, including blood cells.  It is also an important cell-signaling molecule in the immune system.  Our group is studying the role of IL-3 in the immune response to malaria.  We use a mouse model for our studies, including mice that have been genetically engineered in a way that makes them unable to produce IL-3 (i.e., IL-3 “knock-out” mice).  Our ultimate goal is that what we learn will someday be helpful in developing protocols that can be used for the prevention or treatment of malaria.
