ART HISTORY MAJORS: FIRST YEAR

If you are an entering first-year student majoring in Art History (BA degree), you should register for a total of 15 credits (5 classes, usually 3 credits each) your first semester at JMU.

The following is a recommended course sequence, with ARTH 289, ARTH 206 and all General Education-Cluster 1 Classes to be completed by the end of the first year (http://www.jmu.edu/gened/about/GeneralEducationPlannerFINAL.pdf).

NOTE: All  first-year SADAH majors are eligible to add Art Education Licensure to their degree.

SEMESTER ONE - FALL SEMESTER

ARTH 289.  Special Topics in Art History.
This class is for freshman art, art history, architectural design, graphic design and industrial design majors only.  An introduction to the art and architecture of global cultures c.3000 BCE-1400 CE satisfies the major requirement of ARTH 205 for first-year students in SADAH.
 
WRTC 103. Writing. 3 credits
*General Education-Cluster 1: Writing. Must be completed by end of the first year, preferably fall semester.

1 Course in General Education-Cluster 1: Critical Thinking. 3 credits.
A course in this category must be completed by the end of the first year.
or

1 Course in General Education-Cluster 1: Human Communication. 3 credits.
A course in this category must be completed by the end of the first year.

*As an art history major, you have great  flexibility for your remaining 6-9 credits in this fall term.

Options include:

  • ARTH 389/ARTH 301. Special Topics: Institutions and Professions in Art History (a major elective and a Museum Studies class)
  • Taking a Studio or Design class (6 such credits required of the major)
  • Foreign language courses to fulfill the BA requirement through the intermediate level
  • Taking further courses in General Education, Clusters 2-5

Please note: if you may be considering study abroad for future semesters, Cluster 2 courses are commonly offered on JMU OIP programs including in Florence, London and Paris.

SEMESTER TWO - SPRING SEMESTER

In your second semester you should register for a total of 15 credits (5 classes usually 3 credits each):

ARTH 206. Survey of World Art. Renaissance to Modern. 3 credits
*Students with a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Art History exam are exempted from ARTH 206.
Major class, and fulfills General Education-Cluster 2 requirement.

WRTC 103. Writing. 3 credits
*In General Education-Cluster 1. If not taken in the Fall.

1 Course in General Education-Cluster 1: Critical Thinking. 3 credits.
A course in this category must be completed by the end of the first year.

or

1 Course in General Education-Cluster 1: Human Communication. 3 credits.
A course in this category must be completed by the end of the first year.
