Why JMU?

When I was applying to colleges, JMU stood out to me because of the quality of education it provides in variety of fields along with great research facilities and opportunities. Also I was glad to see that James Madison offers a well-organized international program and is located in such a beautiful area. I have never regretted my choice.

What's your favorite class?

I have tried many classes from different departments but my favorite class so far has been my introductory biology lab. In this class we were able to use JMU's incredible facilities to learn how to extract and identify DNA while learning a technique called DNA barcoding. This class is mostly taken by freshmen and sophomores, so it provides an opportunity to feel the excitement of scientific discovery even when you are in the beginning of your scientific education. Not only is my professor a great professional in her field, but she is also a kind and understanding person. She was always happy to help me and explain some words or concepts that I couldn't understand because of the language barrier.

Besides studying, how do you occupy your time?

I enjoy spending my time working with people and interacting with the local community. I am involved in local volunteering. JMU provides great resources to get involved with the university and the city of Harrisonburg. I also enjoy spending my time in the meditation room that is located on campus and attending yoga and other classes at the University Recreation Center.

What clubs and activities are you involved with at JMU?

I try to be an active participant of campus life. Currently I am involved in meditation club, a social activism group, an environmental management club, swing dance club and an agricultural volunteering organization. I was very impressed by the amount and variety of organizations that exist on campus. I think that everyone can find something that aligns with their own interests.

What do you like best about JMU?

Probably my two favorite things about JMU are the outstanding faculty that are passionate about their field of study and the friendly JMU community. I was nervous about coming to such a large university like JMU but to my surprise, I was impressed by the campus' inviting and welcoming atmosphere. It really became a second home for me.

What is the one thing you wish you had known about JMU prior to arriving on campus?

I wish I had known that it is fine to come in as an undeclared major, and it is okay to change your major. Coming here I didn't really know what exactly I wanted to do. However, I thankfully had the opportunity to expose myself to different disciplines, helpful faculty advisors, and the career center. Eventually I was able to find my passion and declare a Biology major that I sincerely enjoy.
