Why JMU?

I choose JMU because it offers an excellent program in Hospitality Management and Business. The faculty and staff here are committed in providing the right tools for students to succeed. At first, I was uncertain about whether or not I would like it in JMU, however after completely immersing myself in my studies and being involved on campus I felt like I belonged here and I see myself continually improving. JMU also have great facilities that can help its students perform at their best such as the student success center, where students can get help with their studies from certified tutors.

What's your favorite class?

I have taken various classes in JMU, however one of the classes that I thoroughly enjoyed was my HM 201 class, which is a Recreation management class for my major. I had a wonderful professor who held inspiring lectures and engaged her students in meaningful discussions about the hospitality management industry. I felt like I gained real-world knowledge that I think would be helpful for my future career.

Besides studying, how do you occupy your time?

I love spending time in the University Recreation Center where I can exercise and engage in a variety of sports. My favorite activities are badminton and boxing. They offer group training sessions where I sign up online and join weekly exercises. I think these activities help boost my stamina and kept me focused for the rest of the week when classes start again. Usually in the weekends, I get an opportunity to hang out with friends and travel to nearby cities to explore. I made some really close friends during my freshman year and it gave me a chance to get together with them.

What clubs and activities are you involved with at JMU?

Currently, I am involved in an organization called the International Student Association. I hold the position of Event Coordinator in which I get together with my other exec boards members to plan social and educational events together, both on campus and also off-campus. In the past, we have held fundraisers, and fun outdoor activities. I think being a part of this organization has taught me how to work well together in a team setting. I have also performed in several cultural shows that are usually held every semester. This has given me a chance to showcase my culture and identity.

What do you like best about JMU?

One of the best things I love about JMU is the fact that you become a part of a large friendly community. You do not have to worry about fitting in because at JMU there is a wide variety of organizations that you can be a part of. I am thankful for the people I have meet thus far and I love how I can just be myself around campus.

What is the one thing you wish you had known about JMU prior to arriving on campus?

I wish I had known how convenient it was to live on campus and how it is perfectly normal if you are undecided about your major. There is plenty of time during your first year to figure things out and work with your advisor on deciding the major and perhaps a minor that would work best for you.
