Break Description

Jumpstart your JMU experience this summer with a week of service! Join other incoming first year and transfer students as we help our neighbors in New Bern, NC to rebuild from the devastation of Hurricane Florence. The storm struck the Carolinas last September, killing 51, and causing almost $17 billion in damages. Almost a year later, historic New Bern is just beginning to recover from the 10-foot storm surge that flooded the town.

We will gather at JMU on the morning of Sunday, July 21st and travel in JMU vans to New Bern that evening. Monday-Friday, we’ll work with Fuller Center Disaster ReBuilders to rebuild homes that were damaged by the hurricane and the subsequent floods. No previous construction experience required. Come ready to learn, work hard, and get dirty! We’ll be housed at two nearby churches (one for men and one for women), sleeping on cots or bunkbeds with mattresses. In the evenings, we’ll share a meal together, reflect on each day’s service, and spend time getting to know one another and building community. We’ll return to campus on Saturday, July 27th

Join us to explore New Bern, to learn about rebuilding after natural disaster, and to meet other New Dukes committed to making a difference!
