Break Description

St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve is a rare intact coastal landscape and recognized hot spot for biodiversity, featuring one of the highest concentrations of rare plants in southeastern United States as well as rare and endangered wildlife. On our break, we'll have the opportunity to assist in preserving this treasure of the Florida coast by cleaning up beach and bay areas, checking boundaries and signs, and assisting with planting projects.

We will make the long drive to Florida in a JMU van and will be housed on-site in a facility that includes beds, showers and a kitchen. The housing facility and visitor center are both ADA-compliant, but some hiking and low water crossings may be required as a component of our service. If you have questions about accessibility, please let us know so that we can discuss potential accommodations with our hosts.

If you are interested in the environment and enjoy service, then come with us on a journey to sunny Florida for a week of service and learning. We hope that this break will teach us to think holistically about environmental issues, be active citizens, and allow us to bring these experiences and skills back to Harrisonburg with us!
