Break Description

Friends of St. Joseph’s Bay Preserves, a non-profit citizen support organization that was established in 2003 with a mission to protect, preserve, and support the St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve  and the St. Joseph Bay Aquatic Preserve.

The organization strives to advocate for the restoration of the preserves by informing citizens of key issues, helping motivate people to be more active in environmental efforts of the preserve, and by keeping the bay “one of the most pristine bays in the world.” The non-profit has over 100 members and receives funding from numerous sponsors including Beach Realty of Cape San Blas, Capitol City Bank, Coastal Realty Group, Emerald Coast FCU, and other private sponsors.

This break’s focus is to work alongside the Friends of St. Joseph's Bay Preserve, Inc. to assist in restoration and protection of the area. The break will include cleaning up beaches, planting native plants, and assisting other special environmental projects! St. Joseph’s Bay State Buffer Preserve is one of six hot spots for biological diversity in the world and home to one of the highest concentrations of rare plants in southeastern United States. Areas such as St. Joseph’s Bay Preserve are an essential part of the community as they provide land protection, recreational and environmental benefits, and more! If you are interested in the environment and enjoy service, then come with us on a journey to sunny Florida for a week of service that will enhance our active citizenship skills and environmental knowledge. We hope that this break will teach us to think holistically about environmental issues, be active citizens, and allow us to bring these experiences and skills back to Harrisonburg with us!
