Break Description

Join us on our alternative break to Sheffield Place in Kansas City, Missouri, where we will aid homeless women and children in their journey toward stability and self-sufficiency! Sheffield Place serves highly traumatized homeless mothers by reducing their barriers to success, including: addiction, domestic violence, and felony convictions. Since their founding in 1991, Sheffield Place has assisted more than 700 families in obtaining housing and a variety of healthcare services. In the last 28 years, Sheffield Place has continued to carry out their mission of “empower[ing] homeless mothers and their children to heal from their trauma and become self-sufficient.” Their team of therapists and experienced case managers embrace a model of trauma informed care in order to foster healing, recovery, and self-sufficiency.

Every Sheffield Place client has four primary goals: stable housing, improved education, improved income, and improved health. On our break, we will have an opportunity to work directly with Sheffield Place clients while learning extensively about the barriers that exist to their self-sufficiency. We will be serving within the main transition home, restoring houses, interacting with families, having conversations with clients, and leading activities for children. An important note for all those interested in this break is that mattresses will not be provided by our housing partner, and additional sleeping materials may be necessary. The leaders intend to obtain inflatable mattresses for use throughout the week in order to make sleeping arrangements more comfortable.
