Break Description

lower_nine.png

Due to hurricanes, The Lower Ninth Ward, because of its proximity to the Industrial Canal levee breach, has been one of the hardest-hit neighborhoods in the Gulf Coast region. Rebuilding in the Lower Nine has lagged behind that of other neighborhoods as a result of poverty, the scale of the devastation and local, state and federal government inaction. lowernine.org is a non-profit that is making a difference in the Lower Ninth Ward community. To date, lowernine.org has fully rebuilt eighty-eight homes, and has completed smaller repair and renovation projects on over two hundred more homes, bringing back more Lower Ninth Ward families than any other single organization. It typically takes around 2 years to finish a full rebuild. Some projects that we may take on are carpentry, roofing, installing insulation, and other projects needed at the site. lowernine.org provides all necessary project training and tools, so even if you’ve never swung a hammer, you can join us in rebuilding homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
