Break Description

LIFESPAN.png

LIFESPAN is an organization out of North Carolina whose mission is to “empower children and adults with disabilities by providing education, employment and enrichment opportunities to live, work and play in their communities.” They serve both children with and without disabilities from six weeks to adulthood, depending on the location and services provided in each particular center. Due to the variety of ages and populations that LIFESPAN serves, LIFESPAN provides various kinds of education services including Inclusive Circle Schools and Special Instruction Programs. For young adults with special needs, LIFESPAN has developed programs called Creative Campuses, which offer enriching opportunities to enroll in Community College courses or extracurricular activities including art, music, horticulture, culinary, fitness, and volunteerism. In addition, LIFESPAN lives up to its name by helping individuals discover employment opportunities and work towards independent living. In order to do this, LIFESPAN operates out of six different types of locations, including the following programs: Day Programs for Adults or Children, Residential Services, Community Employment, Special Instruction, Mosaic Art Studios, and LS Solutions.

On our break we will be serving at one or multiple of these centers. During our week of service, participants are expected to assist with in a variety of campus improvement projects and with interacting with members of the LIFESPAN community. In the past, these improvement projects have involved painting murals, repairing sheds, and gardening, and we expect to engage in similar activities during our week of service. Participants will stay in a local church over the course of the week and will enjoy time in the community surrounding Charlotte, North Carolina. Join Pre-Occupational Therapy students in our mission to serve and learn more about individuals with special needs. Come gain knowledge and skills that will help prepare you as a future health care provider and active citizen.
