Break Description


The focus of this break is to reduce the stigma of mental illness in Montego Bay, Jamaica and gain a better understanding of the concepts taught in SOCI 385: Madness and Society by Dr. Dobransky. Students will work one on one will the individuals at CUMI (Committee for the Upliftment of the Mentally Ill). Their mission is to reach out to, and advocate for, individuals with mental illness who are experiencing homelessness in Montego Bay (St. James) and within the limits of resources available, attempt to improve their level of physical and mental health as well as their basic quality of life.

 Note: This is a course-based break. Participants in this break must enroll in SOCI 385: Madness and Society, The Sociology of Mental Health and Illness in Spring 2020. Please contact Professor Kerry Dobransky at if you are interested in enrolling or would like more information!
