Break Description

During this break, will be working with the Denver Rescue Mission in Denver, Colorado. The Denver Rescue Mission is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving those in the Denver metro area who are experiencing financial hardship, homelessness and addiction. The rescue mission’s goal is to see lives transformed through personal accountability, education, spiritual development, and community relationships. We will learn about the history of Denver and how development of the city has impacted socioeconomic inequality and displaced vulnerable populations. Prior breaks have been able to learn about experiences of poverty, addiction, and homelessness through educational opportunities such as a poverty simulation and listening to speakers share their testimonies.

Throughout the week, we will be working at two centers: an immediate services facility which offers food, shelter and healthcare, and a rehabilitation facility which supports individuals experiencing addiction. While our service will depend on the current needs of the community, prior breaks have served through organizing donations, serving meals, and restoring or cleaning facilities.

In order to fully serve our community partner, participants must be able to carry loads of up to 25 pounds, and be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time. Due to the nature of these work conditions, the break is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.

Come learn about the resilience of communities facing the effects of gentrification, and support community members as they navigate a transforming city landscape
