Break Description

Join us as we partner with The Madison Center for Civic Engagement to travel to our Commonwealth’s capital to learn about voter rights and to register our fellow citizens to vote! We’ll partner with Virginia Civic Engagement Table (VCET), which works “to ensure every Virginian’s right to vote is protected, everyone’s vote has equal weight and that our democracy operates in a way that embraces our diversity.” Prior to the break, we’ll meet to educate ourselves on voting rights in Virginia, including the recent Supreme Court ruling about racial gerrymanding in the Commonwealth. We’ll also meet to complete required voter registration training so that we can legally register as many people as possible during our break.

We’ll leave Harrisonburg on the afternoon of Friday, October 4th and travel to Richmond. That evening, we’ll meet with a representative of the Secretary of the Commonwealth, who will discuss Virginia’s efforts to restore voting rights to citizens with felony convictions. On Saturday, we’re headed to the State Fair of Virginia, where we’ll register attendees to vote in the November state elections. We’ll have an additional service project on Sunday morning and then will head back to campus.

During our break, we’ll stay in a church in Richmond. Expect to sleep in sleeping bags on sleeping pads or air mattresses. We’ll prepare our food in the church kitchen, and showers will be available. If you have any questions or concerns related to accessibility, please let us know so that we can coordinate with our partners as soon as possible.
