Break Description

Pitch in alongside our neighbors to rebuild from the devastation of Hurricane Florence! The storm struck the Carolinas last September, killing 51, and causing almost $17 billion in damages. More than a year later, historic New Bern, NC is just beginning to recover from the 10-foot storm surge that flooded the town.

We’ll work with Fuller Center Disaster ReBuilders to rebuild homes that were damaged by the hurricane and the subsequent floods. Tasks might include insulating, drywalling, floors and doors, cabinets and vanities, trimming, painting, and more. No previous construction experience required. Come ready to learn, work hard, and get dirty!

We’ll be housed at a nearby church, sleeping in gender-separated rooms on cots or bunkbeds with mattresses. In the evenings, we’ll share a meal together, reflect on each day’s service, and spend time getting to know one another and building community. While Fuller Center Disaster ReBuilders welcomes all volunteers, the homes where we will be working will likely not be accessible to those who use wheelchairs.

After natural disasters, Dukes always ask, “How can I help?” Immediately after a storm, well-intentioned but unskilled volunteers usually do more harm than good. Now that New Bern has organizations like Fuller Center Disaster ReBuilders in place, there are opportunities for us to make a positive difference. Come join us!
