Focus on: Community Wellness

Founded in 2001, the Rural Appalachian Improvement League (RAIL) aims to build a new, sustainable social structure and economic base in the coalfield of West Virginia. RAIL was founded in response to severe floods in 2001, where 11 inches of rain fell in just four hours. 80% of the businesses district was destroyed in Mullens. Four major areas that focus on community and economic development include:

  • Mullens Opportunity Center – a community center
  • AmeriCorps – training young adults to rebuild their community and earn a livelihood
  • Specialty Farming – utilizing mountain space, as well as abandoned mine lands
  • Tourism and innovative business programs based on the culture, heritage and natural attributes of the region
