Focus on: Focus on Community Wellness - Immigration

Description:

Join us in building a stronger Hispanic community in southern Texas as we partner with La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE)! Founded by labor rights activist César Chávez in 1989, LUPE has expanded throughout the Rio Grande Valley and impacted thousands of low-income workers and their families. Placing an emphasis on service and learning, LUPE strives to expose students to social justice issues faced at the Texas-Mexico border through a combination of direct service and education. Direct service includes but is not limited to activities such as refurbishing low-income housing, feeding the hungry, and English tutoring. Education refers to hands-on learning about immigration reform and other prevalent social issues through visits to the border wall, El Milagro Clinic, and the colonias. LUPE’s mission is to respond to the social and economic needs of its community, invest in the development of its members, transform the world around it, and build a stronger, more influential community.

This break will fully immerse all participants in the culture, society, and daily lives of residents along the Texas-Mexico border. There will be countless opportunities to meet others, become more aware of the social issues and challenges people must overcome, gain a new perspective, and become exponentially more involved in the community. Help us break down barriers and join with men, women, and children of diverse backgrounds as, together, we tear down walls and build bridges toward a better present and future.
