Focus on: Community Wellness

César Chávez, largely known for his efforts in fighting for the civil rights of immigrant workers, saw a need for a resource that would serve these workers and their families. In 1989, Chávez founded La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) in San Juan, Texas as a foundation for advocacy on behalf of workers and the Latino community in the Rio Grande Valley. The Rio Grande Valley lies alongside the US-Mexico border.

Participants on this trip will have the opportunity to volunteer in colonias, low-income border neighborhoods, and flyer/survey around community needs; work with Proyecto Azteca to refurbish and construct parts of housing units; and learn about immigration reform and immigrant rights during local house visits.
