Break Description

In keeping with the goals of the National Head Start Association to allow for children regardless of socioeconomic status to have the opportunities to succeed, participants on this break will work directly with children of migrant farm workers in the area of Lakeland, Florida. The East Coast Migrant Head Start Project has locations from Florida to Alabama to Pennsylvania. They work specifically with children of seasonal and migrant farm workers to give them an education that will prepare them to be as successful as they can be, despite socioeconomic circumstances. On this break we will work directly with these children by helping in classrooms, working with childcare, and doing anything that we can to help the teachers and staff in their day-to-day management of the centers. We will also learn about the lives of these migrant and seasonal workers by seeing the farms where they are employed and talking to them about their experiences. We will gain insight into the lives of those from different socioeconomic statuses and gain understanding on the issue of inequality in opportunities for children.
