JMU Mace BentleyTitle:

Bringing an Understanding of Southeast Asia Environments & Hazards to Virginia

Principal Investigator:

PI: Mace L. Bentley, Ph.D, Associate Professor, JMU

Co-PI: Dr. Luke Juran, Assistant Professor, Virginia Tech

Summary:

The funding of this proposal will help the development of a new online course entitled Environmental Hazards: A focus on Southeast Asia that examines the complex interactions between earth surface systems and the physical and social environment. The Indian Ocean tsunami illustrates that 21st century disasters can occur in unfamiliar regions of the world; hence, a critical component of curricula expansion is the addition of courses examining natural hazards outside of the United States.  The proposed course is an important component of any curricula designed to prepare students or professionals pursuing a career related to disaster analysis, management, and administration at any level, from managing first responders and pre-disaster preparedness for a municipality, to directing resources at the U.S Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency, to leading programs for the United Nations Inter-Agency secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction.
