Education Majors & Teacher Licensure
Want to teach at the early childhood, elementary, middle or secondary level? How about special education? James Madison University has developed programs especially for you. Each of these new majors leads to a Bachelor of Science that has been specially designed by the College of Education and campus partners to meet a vital nationwide need for trained, committed teachers.
To ensure that you gain the skills needed for this challenging profession, these new majors may require additional content, such as a second major, a minor or an area of emphasis. Keep in mind that admission to a teacher licensure preparation program is not automatic, you must apply after meeting program admission requirements. B.S. in Elementary (Pre-K-6) Education with a required minor in IdLS
|
Drawn from research and theories in child development, teaching, and learning, the course work and field experiences prepare teacher candidates to employ an cross disciplinary approach to instruction that reflects an understanding of the diverse nature of learners and their families.

B.S. in Inclusive Early Childhood Education
|
The inclusive early childhood program draws heavily from research and theories in child development, family systems, special education, differentiated teaching and learning. Through course work and extensive field experiences, the teacher candidate is prepared to design activities that have an interdisciplinary focus, reflect an understanding of the individual child's development and learning, recognize the importance of family and developmental influences, support the young child in constructing knowledge about self and the world, and involve parents in supporting the child's growth and development.

B.S. in Special Education This major is open to students interested in pursuing a career in the field of special education. |
The Special Education program prepares teacher candidates to become special education teachers in kindergarten through 12th grade. Special Education teacher candidates will have the option of pursuing licensure in either General Curriculum Special Education, Adapted Curriculum Special Education, or both.

The Secondary School Education Bachelor of Science program prepares teacher candidates to teach in one of eight content areas in grades six through 12. Teacher candidates will double major in Secondary Education and their content area major. Through extensive content area and education coursework, and multiple field experiences, teacher candidates learn and hone skills that enable them to become successful middle or high school classroom teachers or pursue other career related pathways. |
