Are you confused about which direction you want to go? Do you have many interests but do not know which one will be right for you? Are you looking for a major that allows you to specialize in your field while becoming marketable to employers? The School of Writing, Rhetoric, and Technical Communication is the answer to all your questions. In this program, we teach students how to create, design, edit, analyze, and produce texts, all with the goal of training effective communicators. You can combine these skills with cognate courses from other majors (e.g., SMAD, SCOM, history, psychology, physics, and art history) offered at James Madison University.
WRTC offers both B.A. and B.S. degrees in two concentrations--Technical and Scientific Communication and Rhetoric and Writing--and M.A. and M.S. degrees in Technical and Scientific Communication. The School also offer minors in the two undergraduate concentrations. We prepare our students for the workplace by combining their expertise with skills in writing, rhetoric, and technical communication. In the WRTC program, we focus on the following skills:
- Designing print and electronic publications
- Learning project management skills and the publication cycle
- Writing for the medical industry, government, or scientific fields
- Developing websites using XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Conducting surveys and usability tests
- Learning and applying sound rhetorical principles of communication in academic and professional environments
- Editing manuals, websites, and other documentation
Outside of the classroom, the School sponsors the undergraduate online publication e-Vision and the university-wide writing contest, Write On! The school also provides writing support to students through the Learning Resource Centers and the FYI Resource and Writing Center.
