About the Department of Writing and Rhetoric Studies

The Department of Writing and Rhetoric Studies at James Madison University helps students use writing to learn, think, and communicate in their academic and social contexts, both in college and beyond.

The curriculum provides intensive instruction for students in their freshman year with differing needs, abilities, and interests as well as a Minor in Writing and Rhetoric for students wishing to pursue concentrated and advanced instruction in writing as a valuable complement to a host of different academic majors and professional fields of interest.

As part of Writing and Rhetoric Studies' Writing in the Disciplines initiative, writing intensive courses will extend students' experience and practice as writers beyond the first year and introduce them to more specialized, discipline-specific kinds of discourse.
