Summer Hiring Guide for Student Positions
Hiring Federal Work Study Students for the Summer:
Based on the 2007-2008 Federal Budget allocations and total university expenditures for the Federal Work Study Program (FWS), The Student Work Experience Center has made the decision not to offer federal work study for this summer. The last day a federal work study student can work is May 2nd. If you currently have a FWS student that would like to work over the summer, we suggest you hire them as an Institutional Employment (IE) or wage employee. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Shea Tussing, Student Employment Manager, at 568-3269 or email studentjobs@jmu.edu.
Tips to Remember for Summer Hiring for Student Positions:
- The student does not have to be enrolled in summer classes in order to be employed in a summer position. (However read #4 to learn how this affects their FICA exemption)
- Students can work up to 40 hours per week during the summer time frame regardless of their enrollment status.
- The student must have current student status (i.e., May graduate are not eligible for student positions) and the student must have Intent to Re-enroll for the Fall 2007 semester
- If students are not enrolled or enrolled less than half-time for the summer time frame, the student will NOT be FICA exempt for their employment during that time frame in a student position
- If you have a student currently employed in a position for the academic year and the contract ends in May, you will just need to complete a contract extension PAR form for the summer time frame rather than a Re-Hire PAR form and a Position Description.
