Sallie Funkhouser was born and raised in the City of Harrisonburg and graduated from James Madison University in 1967 with a BS degree in Education.  At that time Sallie was the third member of her family to graduate from JMU. The first family member was her aunt who attended and graduated from JMU in 1922 when JMU was the State Normal School.  Since then there have been twelve family members to attend JMU and graduate including her daughter Elizabeth Funkhouser Kistler (’99) and her husband David (’03), and her son Kemper Funkhouser (’02) and his wife Ashleigh (’02).  Sallie taught in the education field for nineteen years. 

She is married to Joe Funkhouser who presently serves on the Board of Visitors of James Madison University. Sallie and Joe have been active supporters of JMU holding many stakeholder positions for the past thirty years.  Sallie has served two terms on the board of Greater Madison and has also served two terms on the JMU Alumni Board.  Sallie has been a member of the Duke Club for over thirty years.  She is an Endowed Scholarship Donor and an annual donor to many JMU capital projects.
