Kathy graduated from the College of Business at James Madison University in 1978 and received her BBA in Marketing with a minor in data processing/economics. Her first job after school was as a computer programmer for Freddie Mac in the District.

While at JMU, she became involved in the Residence Hall program and served as an RA in Shorts Hall and then Head Resident of Cleveland Hall the following year. She met her husband, Mike Thomas, who was also working in the Residence Hall program in 1977.

For several years, she worked with computers until the first of their four daughters was born. She stayed home to raise her and throughout the years worked part-time as a childbirth educator/doula and preschool teacher.

Kathy and Mike continued to stay in touch with JMU over the years through Duke Club and College of Business connections.   Their oldest daughter attended Va Tech, but three other daughters graduated from JMU.

Kathy has enjoyed watching the changes to campus over the years and stays in touch by coming to the football games and serving on the advisory board for Women for Madison. She is already trying to stir up some “Duke love” in their four grandchildren to encourage the next generation of JMU Dukes!
