Frostburg Weather Radio On-Line

Stations in Northwestern Virginia may have a new link to NOAA Weather Radio - Station WXM43 , Frostburg, MD is now on-line. The installation of this new transmitter was a cooperative effort between Frostburg State University (Radio Station WFWM), the National Weather Service, the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, and Verizon. The transmitter is located on Dan's Mountain, and operates at 162.425 mHz with a power of 300 Watts (Moorefield, in comparison, is 1000 Watts, but has quiet-zone modifications).

Keep in mind that the station is designed to serve Garrett, Allegany and Washington counties in Maryland, as well as several counties in Pennsylvania along with Morgan, Hampshire, Mineral, Grant and Hardy counties in West Virginia, so it will not serve as a replacement as an NWR monitoring assisgnment for Western Virginia. The biggest change will be the elimination of Garrett County (which accounted for a good 30% of "ticker-tape volume") on the Moorefield system. It has been estimated this environmentally-sensitive change will reduce clear-cutting needs by at least 20 acres-a-year!

You can compare the coverage of Frostburg with Moorefield. Signal reports and feedback are welcome; send your comments to Barbara Watson at the Sterling WFO.
