Editing Your Site for the First Time

If this is the first time you've edited your site in the JMU Web Manager, you're first two tasks will be to choose a look for your site and set up your home page. (Don't worry that you might damage your existing site.  All JMU Web Manager edits take place on a "preview" site that's not linked anywhere.  Later, you'll be able to view the preview site before you publish it to your "live" site.)

Once you've chosen the site you want to edit and supplied your Web Publishing Password, you'll be asked to choose a look from the scrolling list … as you select different look names, the thumbnails adjacent to the list will show you what sample home and secondary pages might look like.  To select a look, highlight the look name and click Select Look. Don't be concerned if you can't decide now, you can change your selection at any time … even after your site is live and contains dozens of pages.

Next you will be asked to embed your site information in the look. Fill out the form as completely as possible with information relevant to your Web site. Items marked by an asterisk are required.

Tip for Advanced Users: The Free Text Area has special significance. Special functionality can be embedded into your site by pasting HTML code into this box.

Preview the look and when it's okay, the JMU Web Manager will begin to build your preview site.

The JMU Web Manager next requires you to build your home page.  Type in a name for your home page (notice that it will automatically be preceded by "James Madison University -"); write a short description of the material that will be on your home page; and include several keywords that are likely to be words that Web users might type into a search engine to find your site. Click Next.

Now you've reached the page editor.  By default, the JMU Web Manager has placed your page title in the top Content Pane. You will use one or more Content Panes to hold the HTML content of your page. Click the button labeled click to edit this content pane in the top Content Pane.

Now click Import Text.

On the pop-up window, click Browse and locate the .htm file that contains your home page content.

Click Send HTML file.

The Edit Content Pane should now include the HTML for your home page.  Click Continue.

If necessary, click the Edit Content Pane button to go back and make changes or to re-import.

If the page is okay, click Next to preview it without the Content Pane lines.

If it's okay, click Save to add it to your preview site.

You've now completed your first-time editing work and you will be directed to the Control Panel for your site.
