The University Writing Center

The Writing Center offers writers help with all types of writing, including arguments, scholarly articles, fiction and personal narratives, business writing, formatting and citation, grammar and punctuation, and research strategies. We welcome the brainstormer, the procrastinator, the perfectionist, the disorganized, the perplexed, and you.


We empower students, faculty, and staff to develop writing skills and confidence by providing one-to-one consultations, resources, and programming that support and enhance writing across campus. Come see what our team of professional writing consultants, graduate assistants, and peer tutors has to offer:

  • Free, individualized writing consultations
  • Faculty consultations for designing assignments and for responding to student writing
  • Online resources
  • Online tutoring for those who have trouble visiting the center
  • Computer lab and study space

Locations and Hours

  • Wilson Hall: 45-minute appointments in the 4th floor Wilson Hall Writing Center:
    Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

    EXPANDED Spring 2014 Wilson Hall walk-in hours:
    Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

  • Carrier and Rose Libraries: walk-in hours on the main floor of both libraries:
    Sunday and Wednesday evenings from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.

  • Plecker Athletic Performance Center: walk-in hours in room 233 (open to all JMU students):
    Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

Finals Week, Maymester, and Summer Closure

The UWC will not be open during finals week. We will be moving this summer and will not be open during Maymester or during the summer.

The UWC will reopen in the new Student Success Center in the fall.
