The UWC has teamed up with the Carrier and Rose Libraries to offer the Write Nights program, a late night writing lounge that allows students to work on their writing, get help from trained writing tutors, and stay energized with close access to Starbucks or Java City. The UWC welcomes all students to stop by for help at any stage of the writing process.
The late night tutoring offered in the libraries is different from our traditional appointment-based hours in Wilson Hall. Please read through some of the key differences below.
WALK-IN ONLY: You cannot make an appointment in advance for our Write Nights locations, but we recommend that you register in WC Online, our database and tracking system, to save time when you arrive.
SESSION LENGTH: Tutoring sessions vary, depending on the wait. If no one is waiting, you may get 45 minutes straight with a tutor, but if there are other students waiting, you might end up working with a tutor in shorter increments. A tutor may work with you for 15-20 minutes, go help another student, then return to you later. The great benefit of this system is that writing time is built in. You'll be getting help in the middle of the process instead of getting help at a stopping point.
WHAT TO BRING: We think it would be very useful for you to bring your laptop. It is not totally necessary, but the laptop will allow for more flexibility and productivity. Or bring a hard copy of your work. And bring your assignment.
CHECK-IN PROCESS: When you walk in through the front doors of Carrier Library, take an immediate left and pass the entrance to the stairs. Just before the entrance to the quiet study area, you'll see our sign-in station by the window on your left. At Rose Library (formerly East Campus Library), approach the front desk on the first floor and find the study room to the right. A tutor will be there to help you get signed in. Sign in using the log book on the table and then register in WC Online. If you are already registered, you'll skip to the next step and give us some info about what you want to work on. Then you'll be set up with a tutor, and the magic begins.
READY TO WORK: We're happy to help you, but please arrive ready to work. In an ideal session, you and the tutor will be working together to improve your writing not simply editing or proofreading papers. Please don't expect the tutor to do your work for you.
COFFEE: It's there. It might help.
