Announcements and Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can use the University Writing Center?

The University Writing Center serves the entire JMU community.  We welcome all undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff members.

Where is the University Writing Center located?

We are located in room 417 on the 4th floor of Wilson Hall.

When is the University Writing Center open?

Monday through Friday 8:00 AM-5:00 PM.  We are closed every Wednesday from 11:00-12:30.

Who works at the Writing Center?

We are a team composed of five writing consultants, one ESOL specialist, and two graduate assistants.

What should I bring when I come to the Writing Center?

Please bring your assignment, writing materials, and any writing you have already begun.

What kinds of writing can I bring to the Writing Center?

Students: you are free to bring course-related assignments, personal statements, Master's theses, creative writing, and business writing.

Faculty and staff: we welcome your scholarly and creative writing; also, we can assist faculty with designing writing assignments and responding to student writing.

What happens in a tutoring session?

You are free to decide what aspect of your writing you would like the consultant to address.  This semester, all sessions are scheduled for forty-five minutes.

Do I have to make an appointment, and is there a fee to use the Writing Center?

Walk-ins are welcome, but we recommend that you make an appointment to ensure availability.  The services we provide are free of charge.

May I use the computer lab if I don't have an appointment with a writing consultant?

Yes, the computer lab is available for all writers, and you may use the computer lab without scheduling an appointment with a consultant.

Can I e-mail my paper to the Writing Center or drop it off to be edited?

We are not a proofreading service; however, we are happy to help you develop effective editing strategies.  Instead of e-mailing the paper, we ask that you bring your paper to the Writing Center, and we will consult with you about your writing.  Our primary concern is to help you develop and improve as a writer.

Frequently Asked Questions: Online Scheduler

I typed in my JMU email address and my password, but I received an error message stating, "We could not find that email in our database."  What am I doing wrong?

You need to enter your full email address, including the "@jmu.edu" that follows your e-ID.

How do I delete my appointment?

Click on "My Control Panel" and delete your appointment from the "My Reservations" box.  Note: You cannot delete or modify an appointment if you are within 2 hours of the scheduled time.

I see that the schedule is open for an hour-long session.  Why can I not schedule for the entire 60 minutes?

All consultations are now scheduled for 45 minutes.  The consultants need the last 15 minutes of the hour to compose reports.

Can I schedule an appointment several weeks in advance?
