Kurt Schick, Ph.D.
Interim Coordinator
Kurt Schick coordinates the
University Writing Center and consults with undergraduates,
graduate students, and faculty. As an Assistant Professor of
Writing & Rhetoric Studies, Schick also teaches courses in
critical reading and writing, teaching and tutoring writing, and
rhetoric. His scholarship focuses on coordinating the teaching of
writing, thinking, and civic literacy.

Betty Hoskins, M.A.
Writing Consultant
Mrs. Betty Hoskins
specializes in reading and writing for upperclassmen, graduate
students, faculty, and adult students (especially BIS) in courses
across the curriculum. She sees many students working on
application essays for graduate and professional schools and works
with students preparing to take the writing section of PRAXIS. She
has extensive experience working with different style formats,
including APA, MLA, and Turabian. Having earned her M.A. in English
at the University of Kentucky, she founded what is now the
University Writing Center.

Karen McDonnell, M.A. Writing Consultant
Karen McDonnell splits her
time between consulting with writers in the writing center and
teaching classes for Writing & Rhetoric Studies. She holds a
B.A. and an M.A. in English from JMU, where as an undergraduate she
minored in political science and secondary education. Her interests
include argument, integrating sources, analysis, politics, and the
English language.

Erin Lambert,
M.F.A. Writing
Consultant
Erin Lambert consults with
undergraduate, graduate, and faculty writers on any kind of
writing, but her specialties include humanities and MLA style
documentation. She is an Assistant Professor of Writing &
Rhetoric Studies and teaches Critical Reading & Writing
(GWRIT), as well as Creative Writing--Poetry (ENG 392). Before
joining JMU, she was the writing center coordinator at Hostos
Community College (South Bronx, NY). She also teaches English
courses for Virginia Commonwealth University's summer study abroad
program in Peru.

Laura
Schubert, M.A. Writing
Consultant
Specializing in upper-level
literary analysis and first-year composition, Laura Schubert also
consults with undergraduate, graduate, and faculty writers on any
kind of writing. In addition, she has experience instructing
English to Speakers of Other Languages and previously taught in
Eastern Mennonite University's Intensive English Program.
Currently, Ms. Schubert teaches GWRIT 103 in Writing & Rhetoric
Studies, and her research interests include critical reading,
service learning, and writing center pedagogy.

Kristen Shrewsbury,
M.A. ESOL
Specialist
Ms. Kristen Shrewsbury is the
English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Specialist.
Kristen earned her B.A. in Modern Foreign Language from JMU and her
M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University
of Delaware. Prior to joining JMU, she was an Instructor of
ESOL at the University of Delaware's English Language
Institute. She has worked previously as an ESOL Instructor in
the Shenandoah Valley and has taught English as a Foreign Language
in both Argentina and Brazil.

John Erdos
Graduate Assistant
John Erdos consults with
students at the University Writing Center, and his graduate studies
at JMU are in History. John received his B.A. in English and
History from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He earned
his M.S. in Film from Boston University, where he also tutored in
the Writing Center. Prior to JMU, he worked in the entertainment
industry in Los Angeles, California.

Beth Browning Graduate
Assistant
Ms. Beth Browning is a
Graduate Assistant in the University Writing Center and consults
with both undergraduate and graduate students. She is
currently working on her Master's in English literature and is
training to teach GWRIT 103 in the 2008/2009 school
year.

Ginny Ficker Peer Tutor
Ginny Ficker is a senior here
at JMU. She is finishing up this semester with her Bachelor
of Arts degree in English with a concentration in Writing.
Ginny is a peer writing tutor in the Writing Center and also works
for Madison Magazine, volunteers as a Student Ambassador and sings
in the a cappella group, Into Hymn. She also studied in
Siena, Italy for the fall semester of her junior year.
