To make an appointment, access our online scheduler at http://www.rich17.com/jmu
Once you register, you can make an appointment with any of the writing consultants, simply by selecting an available space.
Undergraduate students may schedule up to two 45-minute individualized writing consultations per week. Graduate students may schedule 2-hour blocks (10 sessions per semester) for thesis work and longer projects. If you have any questions, please consult the FAQs page, call 568-1759, or stop by the office, located on the 4th floor of Wilson Hall.
Please keep in mind our policy about missed appointments: Students who miss two scheduled appointments will be unable to make reservations for the remainder of the semester. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, you can do so up to one hour in advance via the Control Panel of our online scheduler, or, in case of an urgent situation, call 568-1759.
The University Writing Center is now offering online tutoring for students who have difficulty getting to Wilson Hall. If you are interesting in online tutoring, you may send us a request letter explaining your need. Examples of acceptable explanations are full-time work schedules, physical injuries or disabilities, and long commutes to campus. We may request documentation after receiving your request. Please send your request letter to feathejj@jmu.edu.

How to Get the Most out of a Writing Consultation:Come prepared: We encourage you to come early on in your writing process, whenever possible. Bring a description of your assignment (e.g., professor's instructions and rubric). Bring any writing you have started, whether it is a full draft, one paragraph, or just notes. It is also helpful if you know which aspect of your writing you would like to focus on. Be ready to work: Consultants are not proofreaders, but they are very willing to help you organize, edit, rewrite, cut, clarify, expand, and review your writing. Your active participation is vital to the collaborative work that occurs during a consultation. Keep an open mind: Sessions vary from consultant to consultant. You may find yourself reading out loud, freewriting, brainstorming, outlining paragraphs, rewriting sentences, correcting grammar errors, consulting handbooks, or discussing your thesis. Also, be aware that from time to time consultants fill in for other consultants, observe each other, and work together in tutoring sessions. |
