1098-T

General Information

  • What does the 1098-T show? JMU sends 1098-T forms showing eligible tuition charges as well as any free money (grants, scholarships, etc) the student received during the tax year.

  • What is the purpose of the 1098-T form? Please visit the IRS Tax Benefits for Education page for more information on the how the 1098-T can be used.

  • When will I receive a 1098-T? 1098-T forms are mailed no later than January 31 for the preceding tax year.

  • Where are 1098-T forms mailed? 1098-T forms are mailed to the Home address the student has listed in MyMadison.

  • Can I request a second copy of my 1098-T? Students can print their 1098-T through our vendor's website www.1098-t.com.
    Alternatively, the student may request a copy of their 1098-T be sent by contacting the University Business Office. This request must be in one of the following forms: an email from their JMU email account, a signed request mailed or faxed to the University Business Office, or a request made in person at the University Business Office. This request must come from the student and should include the student's ID number and the correct address to which the 1098-T should be mailed.

  • Why didn't I receive a 1098-T form? JMU does not create 1098-T forms for students who meet any of the following criteria:
    • Students whose qualified tuition expenses are entirely waived or paid entirely with scholarships or grants.
    • Nonresident alien students, unless requested by the student.
    • Students whose qualified tuition is covered by the students employer or a government entity.
    • Courses for which no academic credit is offered, even if the student is otherwise enrolled in a degree program.
