In our major, we teach students how to create, design, edit, analyze, produce, and communicate. You can combine these skills with cognate courses from other programs at JMU.

What is a cognate? It is the key to our hybrid major and it gives you the flexibility to take courses in other majors, e.g., SMAD, SCOM, History, Psychology, Physics, Art History, etc. Do you want to pursue a B.A., B.S., M.A., or M.S.? These options are all available.

We prepare our students for the workplace by combining their expertise with skills in technical communication. Are you interested in

  • Designing print and electronic publications with the Adobe™ suite?

  • Learning project management skills and the publication cycle

  • Writing for the medical industry, government, or scientific fields?

  • Developing websites using Adobe Dreamweaver, XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript?

  • Conducting surveys and usability tests?

  • Editing manuals, websites, and other documentation?

  • Writing technical documents, e.g., memos, user manuals, proposals, and professional portfolios?
