ITSC Internship Requirements

To earn credit for an internship, you must:

  1. Obtain approval in advance from the department’s internship adviser.  Make an appointment with the internship adviser in order to obtain the approval.
  2. Complete the application forms available on the Web or from Judy Powell and turn them in before starting the internship.
  3. Register for the internship by signing up for either TSC 495 if you are an undergraduate student or TSC 695 if you are a graduate student.

Internships will not be given credit after the fact.

While you are working as an intern, you must:

Policies Governing the Internship

Requirements:  You must complete all of the requirements listed above.  You can receive a failing grade if any of the requirements are missing from your internship file.

Deadline:  Closeout reports are due one week before the end of the period during which you intern.  You will be penalized and you may receive a failing grade for the internship if your closeout report fails to arrive at the ITSC office one week before the end of that time.  For example, you do the work of your internship during eight weeks of summer from June 1 to August 1.  You must get the closeout report to the internship adviser by July 24.  This deadline is important because summer internships tend to have flexible schedules that do not conform to the regular semester dates.  Therefore, you are required to get that closeout report to the internship adviser one week before the end of your internship regardless of the semester during which you register for it.

Delays:  All delays must be negotiated in advance with the internship adviser.

Internship Adviser:  The internship adviser for 2002-2003 is Dr. Alice Philbin.  You can reach her at 540-568-8018 or philbiai@jmu.edu.

Bi-Weekly Reports

The bi-weekly report should be no longer than one page.  In it, you should report the hours you have worked, the projects you have completed, and the projects you are working on.  You should also discuss what you have learned.  E-mail the report to Dr. Alice Philbin at philbiai@jmu.eduSave copies of your bi-weekly reports; you will need them for the closeout report.

Closeout Report

Your closeout report should be written as a memo to the internship adviser.  You might report on:  the name and type of firm, what the firm does, what projects you worked on, what you learned, and what your observations are about the internship.  Would you recommend this internship to others?  How have you grown or changed as a result of this experience?  If possible, include a sample of your work with the closeout report.
