Transfer Students Seeking a Second Degree

Students who have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university other than JMU and wish to earn a second degree from James Madison University must follow the regular transfer admission process with one exception: a copy of the high school transcript is not required. In addition, second-degree seeking students are not required to fulfill any General Education or Liberal Studies requirements and therefore will not receive a credit evaluation of their previous course work.

In order to receive a second degree from JMU, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Complete a minimum of 30 credit hours of additional course work and two regular semesters at JMU (including the semester in which the requirements for the second baccalaureate degree are met).
  • Meet all prerequisite and course requirements in the major field, as well as degree requirements for the second baccalaureate degree program.
  • Earn a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher in course work completed for the major and second baccalaureate degree program.

For information on JMU's academic programs, go to JMU Majors.

Students who have earned a bachelor's degree from JMU and wish to return to earn a second degree are classified as re-entry students and must follow the process for re-admission.
