Session One
Understanding Leadership

Our first session will help prospective leaders understand the leadership culture at JMU. After completing this module you will be able to:

  • Identify five JMU leadership keys
  • Identify some models for leadership
  • Understand the importance of relationship building in leadership
  • Identify workplace success questions as defined by the Gallup Study

Session Two
The Power of Synergy

Session Two will help participants recognize that healthy and productive teams will not develop without strong leaders to lead and coach them. After completing this module you will be able to:

  • Understand the power of synergy
  • List characteristics of effective teams
  • Identify the components of effective team work

Customer Service in Your Own Backyard

Session Three will help prospective leaders understand that those they lead may be their most important customers. After completing this professional development course, you will be able to:

  • Identify all of their customers, both internal and external
  • Apply basic customer service tips to the employees within their department
  • Create a strategy for building appropriate relationships with those they may lead
  • Develop ways to balance office friendships with business relationships

Managing Diversity in the Workplace

This session will help you develop strategies for managing diversity in your departments. After completing this module you will be able to:

  • Identify the impact diversity may have on a department

  • Develop strategies for leading diverse teams

Prospective leaders will be provided with new strategies to deal with conflict proactively and effectively. By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify the most common causes of conflict in an organization
  • Indentify outcomes of dealing with conflict constructively
  • Follow the steps to effectively deal with conflict
  • Identify resources for conflict resolution

Session Six will help participants integrate the knowledge they are acquiring with the development needs of those they lead. After completing this session you will be able to:

  • Assist with the establishment of individual professional development plans

The Cherry Tree Approach

This professional development course will help participants recognize the importance of integrity and honesty in a leadership role. After completing this module you will be able to:

  • Identify the importance of integrity in the workplace
