GETTING IN TO THE MUSICAL THEATRE MAJOR

An audition and interview is required for admission to the Musical Theatre Major in the
School of Theatre and Dance.  To do so, students must apply to both JMU and the School of Theatre and Dance separately and register for an audition. Please see our Musical Theatre Audition Requirements for how to best prepare your Musical Theatre Major application and audition.

Students who have auditioned for JMU at the Virginia Theatre Association, are still required to apply and audition in the same way as any other applicant.

Prospective Students may elect to audition for BOTH the Musical Theatre and Theatre majors. Students who wish to be considered for both majors must register for each audition separately. You are encouraged to audition and interview for both on the same day, and early registration is suggested in order to make sure that slots are available for both majors on your desired audition date. You should prepare the audition requirements for both the Musical Theatre Major and the Theatre Major if auditioning for both programs.

WHAT TO EXPECT

TitleYour audition for the Musical Theatre major at JMU is an opportunity for you to share who you are as person, as well as your current skills as a performing artist.  While you are evaluated in the three components of musical theatre performance… singing, acting, dancing… we are equally interested in getting the opportunity to know what makes you unique as a person and artist.

If you are auditioning in NYC you will be asked to submit a dance audition video.

The information above is an overview of the musical theatre audition.  It is imperative that you review the Musical Theatre Audition Requirements for details on how to best prepare your Musical Theatre Major application and audition.

How to Apply
  1. First, submit your Undergraduate Admissions Application via the JMU Admissions Office.
  2. Next, register for an audition. Applicants are strongly encouraged to audition in-person. If you
are auditioning for both the Theatre and Musical Theatre majors you must register for
    each audition separately.
  3. Finally, submit your School of Theatre and Dance Application on Slideroom at least 5-days prior to your audition/interview. If you are auditioning for both Theatre and Musical Theatre majors you should submit one Slideroom application.
