Cynthia Thompson received her M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She has taught, performed, and choreographed nationally and internationally in Denmark, Germany, Poland and Portugal to critical acclaim under the auspices of the thompson & trammell dance foundation, inc., an organization she co-founded with Kate Trammell.  She was a soloist with the M.M. Colbert Modern Ballet Company, the Chattanooga Ballet, Ballet South, and the Wisconsin School of Ballet where she was also on the faculty.  As an independent artist, Thompson’s choreography has been selected for showcases in Washington, D.C., Wisconsin and at American College Dance Festivals. In addition, she has performed at The Kennedy Center, Dance Place in Washington, D.C., Grace Street Theater in Richmond, V.A., at the Workspace for Choreographers in Sperryville, V.A., Washington and Lee University, and twice as a distinguished alumna in gala concerts at the Wisconsin Union Theatre in Madison, W.I. She collaborated with choreographers Robin Harris and Sharon Wyrrick and performance artist Mark Anderson on her solo concert, Location. Since 2006, she has been a guest artist in residence and on tour with the NYC-based dance company Cora Dance.  Cynthia is a professor of dance at James Madison University. In 1995, she was awarded the Carl L. Harter Distinguished Teaching Award, the highest honor given to a teacher on the JMU campus for that year. In 2015, she was selected to be the College of Visual and Performing Arts Madison Scholar in recognition of her creative accomplishments. Cynthia is the associate director of the School of Theatre and Dance and she has twice served on the board of directors of the American College Dance Association. Thompson is also on the faculty of the Mid-Atlantic Summer Dance Intensive.
