Description

I am looking for someone with Special Education background to be a Big Brother/Sister to my 14 year old son who is on the spectrum. (Aspergers) This position is for the 2017 summer, but could extend into the school year if both parties desire.

Responsibilities:

  • To help my son stay safe while exploring his environment. Play video games, go on nature walks, whatever fun activity - it's summer, after all! Some times impulse control isn't the best, so you'll need to help him talk through some moments.
  • Develop or reinforce appropriate coping mechanisms for stressful situations.
  • In general, form a bond with him similar to older sibling or cousin. If outside school hours, take him places and have fun with him; working on social skills and basic manners in public settings. I must know where you are headed when taking a "field trips" (ie park, nature trail, mall). I can supplement gas money for activities.

Requirements:

  • Non-smoker
  • Comfortable around pets. (Cats and small dog)
  • Experience working with individuals who are different, but not less.
  • Have own reliable transportation. (No DUI, adequate insurance)
  • Availability: starting as close to May 30 as feasible. Up to 40 hours a week, somewhat flexible on days.
  • Ability to read non-verbal cues. Although he is verbal, he doesn't always find the word he means.
  • This is an EDCD waiver position. The wage is $9.22, paid biweekly, unless the state changes it. You are paid through them, so minimal computer skills are necessary to submit electronic time sheets. Easy enough to do on a smartphone or iPad. They also run a CPS background check.
  • Ability to exercise patience, while insisting on a structured routine. (For example, if Tuesday is park day, he must wear street clothes, no pjs. Let's change so we can go.)
  • Applicants with PPL clearance or Precious Times experience are short listed!

How to Apply:

Please send me an email describing:

  • your experience working with children. (volunteer or paid)
  • your year and major
  • In providing your contact information, list how you are most comfortable communicating regarding this position: email, text, phone (if so, what hours are appropriate to call).
