On the Road Collaborative is a non-profit youth empowerment organization that helps to set underserved middle and high school youth (grades 6-9) on the road to college and career in Harrisonburg City. We operate afterschool learning programs that provide academic support, project-based career enrichment learning and leadership development. We serve more than 100 youth annually.

Team Leaders are the lead staff for the On the Road Collaborative afterschool program at Skyline Middle School (Harrisonburg), and work closely with school faculty, families and volunteers to deliver positive academic and social-emotional outcomes for youth. Team Leaders are responsible for co-leading teams of 15 youth through purposeful programming, primarily:  structured academic support, hands-on enrichment projects, health & wellness and teambuilding.

-Serve as academic coaches, who motivate youth to succeed by leading and teaching them through varied learning environments and experiences
-Create a safe, positive learning environment that responds to the individual needs of youth and celebrates effort, growth and achievement in a team setting
-Build strong relationships with their youth, serving as positive mentors and role models by teaching our core values (focused effort, kindness, courage, perseverance and cooperation) and developing youths’ leadership ability
-Work in close partnership with our volunteer Community Teachers and create new learning opportunities by making community connections (e.g. recruiting tutors)


Team Leaders MUST be available at least 2 afternoons per week (Monday-Thursday) between 2:45-5:15 p.m. and some other times as required for meetings, trainings and special field trips and/or family events in the evenings during the 2017-2018 school year. The afterschool program takes place at Skyline Middle School (470 Linda Lane, Harrisonburg).


Strong candidates for this position will demonstrate the following characteristics:
-Knowledge of, and commitment to the On the Road Collaborative programs’ mission and goals
-Demonstrated ability to engage, lead and instruct youth individually and in groups
-Commitment to youth development and achievement
-Willingness to learn students’ math and language arts content
-Demonstrated desire and ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people
-Initiative, resourcefulness and problem solving skills
-Organization and time management skills
-Proficiency in Spanish a plus
