Succeed In Your Studies: A Profile of Lulu Yang

Portrait of Lulu Yang

By, Madeline Holden

Lulu Yang is a JMU junior, studying abroad in the U.S.from China for her college education. Her major is Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies (IDLS) and she is focusing on Elementary Education.  She has enjoyed her education professors and classes at JMU immensely, particularly her EDUC 310 course: “Teaching in a Diverse Society”.  She loves to work with young children and can picture herself working as a kindergarten teacher one day. Additionally, she has a TESOL minor and might like to teach English to Chinese students.

Lulu’s native language is Chinese but she started learning English at a young age.  She first heard about English Language Learner Services (ELLS) through her WRTC professor freshmen year.  ELLS offers academic assistance specifically for English Language Learners. She has worked regularly with a tutor ever since and receives help with her writing assignments.  She has also been able to prepare for her PRAXIS- exam with the help of  ELLS.  One piece of advice she would give to international students at JMU is to take advantage of all the resources available to them.

Lulu said, “These services are free and people are really nice. They really want you to succeed in your studies and are very willing to help, especially for international students. I didn’t know about a lot of the tutoring services until my professor and friends told me about them.”

Like many college students, Lulu doesn’t particularly enjoy writing even in her native language. Writing in English is even more of challenge. Lulu received personal, customized assistance from ELLS, where sessions cater to the specific language needs of students for whom English is not a native language.  “I didn’t have a lot of ideas when I first received an essay topic so I came here to talk to Kristen and brainstorm. She’s always so good at helping me come up with topics to write about.”

Her favorite thing about  JMU is the friendly people on campus. Lulu is one of few international students in the IDLS major but she feels that professors have been very caring and helpful towards her in her studies. In her free time, Lulu enjoys watching Chinese TV shows and some American Dramas like Arrow and The Vampire Diaries.  The things she misses most about home are her family, friends, and the food there. One service she would like to see at ELLS in the future is more help with reading and vocabulary and possibly programs designated for practicing these skills.
